Become part of History

Today Elanda Point rings to the sounds of 30,000 people annually, people who simply enjoy adventure holidays in the wilderness. However, 130 years ago, the old township of Elanda Point at nearby Mill Point rattled to the sound of 250 people, mainly timber workers and their young families. Then in 1875 the wood fired boiler, which provided steam to drive the saws in the timber mill, exploded, killing 5 men who were buried at the old graveyard near Elanda Point.

This disaster caused the timber mill to close and by 1878 as people left to seek work elsewhere, the township became the deserted ghost town it is today inhabited only by kangaroos, goannas and dingoes. At night the area echoes to the sound of the rarely seen but often heard bush curlews. The screaming sound of the night bird led to the stories of the ghosts of the five men howling at the old graveyard at night.

The Elanda Point Canoe Company invites you to become part of the history of this area with canoe and boat hire and safaris involving cabin and camping accommodation, as well as water-taxi transport and landcruiser taxi transport throughout the Cooloola.
